JAY BENTLEY

A SoCal punk band formed in 1980, Bad Religion became an early figurehead of the US punk rock scene and spearheaded its resurgence in the decade that followed. Set apart by the social conscious/political slant of their lyrics and vocal harmonies (yes, they harmonize!), the band's 1988 album Suffer is said by critics to have "sav[ed] the Southern California punk rock scene," then mired in commercial narcissism. Nearly thirty years since they formed, Bad Religion is still touring and recording, the current state of world affairs fuel for their expression.

Jay Bentley's bass contributions act as punctuation to the band's ideology. Hard and direct, punk rock bassists have followed Bentley's outline of lashing dynamics, as exemplified in the band's 1982 album, How Could Hell Be Any Worse? (containing 28 songs), which have since become genre standards.
