Formed in Germantown, Maryland and together since the early ’90s, alt-metal group Clutch are not only one of rock’s more lyrically surreal bands, they’re also the most prolific, releasing an album every year since 1993.
What started with Clutch doing a suburban metal take on hardcore punk in the beginning, today sees them migrating towards a harder, metal blues sound. Almost consciously stepping away from commercial success, the band has built an impressive following around their determined touring and recording schedule, often playing over 100 shows a year. Despite shunning the spotlight, Clutch’s music has been used in movies (Escape From L.A., New World Disorder) and video games (Hitman: Contracts, Prey) as well as compilation albums (Viva La Bands).
Employing a metal jam style bass built from a foundation of Black Sabbath and Zeppelin, Dan Maines is responsible for Clutch’s bluesy sludge and metallic bulk.
