Dino “The Ampeg Guy” Monoxelos
Dean “Dino” Monoxelos has been a bass player since the age of 13. Some 32 years later he’s still perfecting his craft. Born from the James Jamerson and Duck Dunn school of playing, he relies on two very important fundamentals as a bass player, great feel, and great tone! That along with a good sense of humor is something he instills in every one of his students. Having a working knowledge in most contemporary styles of music has also helped him along in his journey as a professional bass player. From Armenian Salsa to full blown Heavy Metal, he is at home in any style. He credits this to his love of all types of music but his true love is for R&B and Funk.
Born and raised in Dracut MA, Dino started out as many kids do, local garage bands and the high school jazz band where he was awarded the Louis Armstrong Award for Best Jazz Bassist. After playing the New England club scene for 10 years, Los Angeles became his next target. He went Musicians Institute (BIT) in 1991 and after graduating, was asked to join the faculty. There he studied with Bob Magnusson, Putter Smith, Jeff Berlin, Gary Willis, Steve Bailey, Alexis Sklarevski, Jim Lacefield and Tim Bogert to name just few, and since he’s been back in Boston, Bruce Gertz.
Author of four books so far, Odd Meter Bassics (MonoTunes Publishing), Essential Styles for Bass, Scale Studies for Bass and Electric Bass for the Young Beginner (all with Mel Bay). Odd Meter Bassics and Essential Styles for Bass have both been acclaimed by Bass Player Magazine, and Bassics Magazine among various other bass related periodicals and websites. Dino is also the featured instructor on DVDs for three Mel Bay books; Complete Electric Bass Method Vols 1 & 2, First Lessons Bass and Bass Chord Picture Book. He has written instructional columns for Bass Guitar Magazine called “Bass Progressions” and “The Odd Meter Zone” for Bass Frontiers Magazine. Dino is currently the Senior Product Specialist/Clinician for Ampeg Amplifiers and travels all over the globe promoting the Ampeg brand through clinics and in-store appearances.
