Band: Throw Rag
Gear: SVT-4PRO, SVT-810E
Described as the “musical equivalent of Bukowski and Hunter S. Thompson on that final screaming blowout,” Salton Sea’s Throw Rag — unashamedly pre-hardcore — manage to pull off relevance without getting their tires blown out in retro punk potholes. Arrogantly manic as good punk should be and gleeful as a joyride in a stolen vehicle, the Rags are hi-test fuel in a beater, with stop signs ignored.
The adrenaline push of “Hang Up” recalls the scream-along exuberance of the Sex Pistols, but the riffs on tracks like “Swingset Superman” and “Radio Romantica” pay affectionate middle finger homage to Dead Kennedys.
Franco Fontana’s bass playing is as frenetic, sympathetic and pathetic (in a good way) as the music itself. Where few punk bassists can do little more than hang on for the ride, Fontana grabs the steering wheel.
