Jack Lawrence, member of the indie garage rock trio The Greenhornes, Blanche and The Raconteurs, is not only an accomplished bassist, but also a multi-instrumentalist, fluent on the banjo, accordion, piano, mandolin, clarinet and drums. With the Greenhornes since the mid-’90s, it wasn’t until the runaway popularity of The Raconteurs (featuring Jack White of the White Stripes) that Lawrence got his first taste of commercial success. The band’s single “Steady, As She Goes” topped the UK, US and Canadian charts in 2006, paving the way for the band’s sold-out world tour.
Lawrence’s sparse and lingering style is a symbiotic fit with The Raconteurs, but it was his dulcet bass tones that were called in to play on Loretta Lynn’s 2004 Grammy-winning album, Van Lear Rose (produced by White). The almost poignant aspect of his playing was a perfect complement to Lynn’s darkly melancholic songs.
