A founding member of American rock band Wilco and alternative country group Uncle Tupelo, John Stirratt took the traditional role of bass guitar and, with an almost subliminal approach, wove it into the band’s innovative rustic avant-pop. His spellbinding bass shadowing on “Remember The Mountain Bed” remains a high-water mark on the band’s engaging Mermaid Avenue Volume II.
Pushing the boundaries further, Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was an emotional merger of subtle pop and sonic dissonance against a backdrop of aural folk, and is considered one of the best albums of 2002. A Ghost Is Born, an even more experimental album, scored two Grammys, including “best alternative album.” The band’s latest studio release, Sky Blue Sky, came out in Spring 2007.
