Texan punk rockers Riverboat Gamblers write songs about drinking and gambling and are regarded as much for their deranged live shows as they are for their raucous recordings. This was founding member/bassist Pat “Spider” Lillard’s “up yours” response to the late ’90s emo movement.
In 2001 the Gamblers were at the forefront of the Denton, TX college music scene, led by the independently released single, “Jenna Is A No Show.” The band’s subsequent albums,Riverboat Gamblers (2001) andSomething To Crow About (2003) turned them into underground cult favs, landing them on the 2005 Warped Tour. In 2006 Spin magazine placed RG in the Top 25 live bands of that year, alongside U2, Green Day, and The Hives.
Riverboat Gamblers’ live shows and Lillard’s bass playing are synonymous — so chaotic as to border on genius, belonging in the “gotta see it to believe it” category.
