When alternative roots rock began its resurgence in the early 2000s, L.A.’s Rilo Kiley’s folk pop debut album, Take Offs And Landings (2001) was poised for an early lead. Soothing and memorable melodies were just a part of the quartet’s appeal; the bittersweet lyrics became less forlorn when presented in front of a backdrop of warm acoustic guitar, bass and drums. Bassist Pierre de Reeder laid down an inviting passageway of tones, creating a gentle four-way intersection for passing lyrical moods. This caught the attention of Coldplay, whom Rilo opened for on their Twisted Logic tour in 2005.
Rilo Kiley has seen their music used on the hit television shows Dawson’s Creek, The O.C. and Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The song “Portions For Foxes” from 2004′s More Adventurousalbum was featured on the pilot episode of Grey’s Anatomy, setting the precedent for the show’s use of new alt-rock artists.
