Although he didn’t join until well after alternative pop nerds Weezer slingshot to multi-platinum fame in 1994 on the back of the kitschy Happy Days-esque video for the single, “Buddy Holly,” bassist Scott Shriner was first a provisional stand-in and, a year later, a full-fledged member on the band’s 2002 critical and commercial re-peaking, Maladroit. His heavier punk instincts brought a welcome and raucous edge to the band; His contribution to tracks like the big beat thrash of “American Gigolo” and the hard ‘n hooky “Space Rock” are among Weezer’s best and heaviest.
Their third bassist, Shriner’s eclectic background in bands as The Movers, Black Elvis, The Great Barbeque Gods and even (for a short period) Vanilla Ice, make him an ideal compliment to Weezer’s famously idiosyncratic pop hooks.
