On Lucinda Willams’ confrontational 2004 album World Without Tears, a music critic was moved to describe bassist Taras Prodaniuk’s playing on the track “Atonement” by saying “his fuzzed-out basement-level gutter bass is the dirtiest, raunchiest thing on record since early Black Sabbath.” This is in stark contrast to Prodaniuk’s usual sweet and melodic accompaniment, oftentimes sounding less like a bass and more like a friend’s shoulder to cry on, a perfect foil for Williams’ emotional songwriting style.
With traditional country & western music as his template, Prodaniuk demonstrates effortless range over cry-in-your-beer ballads and dusty Americana, to rug-cutting honky tonk and barroom blues.
Prodaniuk (pronounced “pro – don – uke”) played bass for Dwight Yoakam for nine years, stepping out in 2001 to join up with Lucinda Williams.
