Tom Kennedy began playing the acoustic bass at the age of nine. By 10 he and his brother, pianist Ray Kennedy, became a fixture on the St. Louis jazz circuit. Before he turned 21, Tom had performed with such jazz veterans as David Sanborn, Stan Kenton and Freddie Hubbard. Moving to New York in 1984, Tom played with the celebrated jazz group, Steps Ahead, and appeared on albums with Al DiMeola, Lee Ritenour and Stan Grusin. So vast are his musical credits, it’s easier to list who he didn’t play with.
Tom released his debut solo album Basses Loaded in 1997, and in 2002 recorded Bassics, featuring jazz legends Joe Labarera and Mundell Lowe. These days an integral part of the Dave Weckl Band, Tom’s fleet-fingered, poppin’ bass excursions are just part of a distinguished resume and a name synonymous with jazz bass.
