Inter-Scrambler Overdrive

SCP-OD_LG.jpg

Our pals over at Guitar World have cottoned on to a vintage piece of Ampeg gear, the Scrambler Overdrive pedal. In their December 2006 issue story "Weird Science," they've got an entry for it, under the subheading "The 10 Strangest Vintage Effects of All Time." Well, we wouldn't call it strange. The Scrambler--currently available as the SCP-OD--is a great way to add fuzz/overdrive/distortion to your guitar tone without taking away your axe's characteristic tone. GW's Chris Gill says the original is "rarer than Paris Hilton's brain cells," and though we're not exactly paying attention to how many brains the lady has, we do know that you can get yourself a modern reissue of this baby today at your local Ampeg dealer. If you want to "generate a mutated rainbow of fuzz tones" then go try one out today.

Orson's Well With Ampeg

orson_bass_crop.jpg

Hollywood alt/pop band Orson has been hitting it big in the UK lately, and bassist Johnny Lonely's been holding down the bottom end with... you guessed it, Ampeg. Our intrepid photog/gadfly David Phillips snapped this photo showing Lonely with an SVT-VR head and SVT-810AV cabinet, probably while the band treated thousands of fans to singles "Bright Idea" or "No Tomorrow." The band's been across the Atlantic lately in support of their Bright Idea CD. Their music's been called "the missing link between The Rolling Stones and the Scissor Sisters." If that's the case then you know Lonely's got to be playing some pretty cool 'n' funky bass licks. Good thing he's using Ampeg to help him.

Ampeg on Little Steven's Underground Garage Tour

lilsteven.jpg

This month marks the start up of Little Steven Van Zandt’s Underground Garage’s Rolling Rock and Roll Show!

Little Steven’s Garage Radio Show kicked off in April of 2002 across 20 FM radio stations across America. The concept of the 2-hour show was simple – to play music he liked and that no one else was playing! Currently, the show has its own Sirius Satellite station (on channel 25), and is heard across 143 radio stations with an audience of 1.2 million listeners.

Steven hosted his first International Underground Garage festival in August 2004 in New York City, with an audience of 16,000. The music was provided by Iggy and the Stooges, The New York Dolls, The Strokes, The Pretty Things, The Romantics, The Raveonettes, Bo Diddley and about 35 other bands crossing five decades of rock and roll.

R.E.M.'s Mike Mills Seen With Dan Armstrong... See-Through Bass That Is

REM_ampegblog2.jpg

Imagine Ampegleg Pete's happy joy when he learned that one of his favorite bands of all-time was releasing an early-years best-of with lots of rare and unreleased tunage. Now, imagine my happy happy joy joy to see R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills pictured playing an Ampeg Dan Armstrong bass on the cover of said CD... and the DVD!

Yup, ol' Mikey's pictured in a vintage shot of the band JUMPING INTO THE AIR with a vintage DA bass. The photo, shot by Terry Allen, appears on the front of both And I Feel Fine: The Best of the IRS Years CD (which comes in both a 1-disc and deluxe 2-disc version; wonder which one I got?!) and When The Light Is Mine: The Best of the IRS Years Video Collection DVD. Both the CD and DVD collect some great tunes (and videos) of R.E.M.'s early days, back when they were no doubt touring out of the back of a van and living the kind of life I only dreamed about as a kid watching the Monkees on TV. I mean, these guys used to live and rehearse in an abandoned Athens, GA church, fer cryin' out loud! Sure, it's unlikely they had go-karts that they drove around the church (wouldn't want to put nice big dents in the pews), but hey... why rain on a rock 'n' roll kid's parade? Let me have my dreams! And thanks to Mike Mills for using the old Dan Armstrong bass. The guy had great taste in basses right from the get-go!
