Bass Gear Magazine - The Ampeg Issue

Bass-Gear-Ampeg-Cover.jpg

Bass Gear magazine was launched in early 2008, but has since become the number one publication for bass. Specifically, the magazine focuses on gear and just gear. There are rarely interviews, and when they happen, they are firmly centered around gear. The success of Bass Gear comes from the depth of experience that the writers impart. Ampeg often makes the pages, but never in the comprehensive manner you will see in the new issue (due out late October), which is dedicated to everything Ampeg.

Here's a sneak peek at what you can expect:

The Men Who Created the SVT - Roger Cox and Bill Hughes (interview)

Ampeg Today - Q&A with Loud Tech (feature article)

Full Bench-test Gear Reviews:
* Ampeg Micro-VR Head
* Ampeg SVT-210AV Cabinet
* Ampeg Vintage B-15

So there you have it. Learn about the great people that made Ampeg, get a glimpse of Ampeg's present and learn about the latest gear. If you love Ampeg, you really couldn't ask for anything more.

Conrad Korsch & the Micro-VR Stack

Conrad-Korsch.jpg

Conrad Korsch is a New York City based acoustic and electric bassist/multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and educator. As bassist with Rod Stewart, Carly Simon, Andrea Bocelli, Bette Midler, Clay Aiken, Deborah Gibson, the Broadway show Swing!, the annual Jerry Lewis/MDA Telethon's New York house band, and as a substitute in the Saturday Night Live house band, Conrad has appeared on nearly every broadcast TV show which features live music.

He recently just finished up a tour with Rod Stewart. Ampeg caught up with Korsch, with a brand new Micro-VR stack (Micro-VR head & SVT-210AV) in hand. We’ve been getting these out to a ton of pro bassists these days, and Korsch’s reaction fell right in line. He loves it, especially for double bass gigs. He might even use it in some upcoming recordings for his solo project.

By the way, you should really check out his new album. It’s called Live Love Leave. Sample some tracks on Korsch’s MySpace page, or just pick it up at CD Baby.

There you go. Another awesome bassist, another Micro-VR.

A Jeep, a Pole and an Ampeg

Da-Jeep.jpgA couple of days ago, we were contacted by an Ampeg fan via MySpace. We talk to a lot of fans, but this story was too amazing not to share. No need to paraphrase...here you go:

Greetings,

I just wanted to share a story and a compliment for Ampeg quality and craftmanship.

Back in 2001 I purchased a used Ampeg B-2 combo bass amp/head. Since then I have used it heavily, for everything from rock shows and tours, to outdoor weddings. This thing has been a beast (in a good way). I broke the power switch early on and replaced it with an industrial switch, no problems there. The caster wheel socket stripped out a few years back, but the side handles have made moving it a breeze still. And the most important part has been, of course, the sound quality.

B-2.jpgThis is all fine and dandy, and I've never had any problems with it at all, but two weeks ago something happened that totally blew me away. I loaned my Jeep to a friend the day after a show with the B-2 still in the trunk. This friend managed to lose control on wet roads and smack head on into a power pole going approximately 50+ mph. Thankfully no one was seriously injured. When I went to the junkyard to get my personal items from the totaled Jeep, I opened the trunk expecting the B-2 to be destroyed. But there it was, still in one piece. It had slammed into the rear seats breaking them off their metal attachment points. The rear support bar that runs vertically up the seat back, which normally looks like .. , was bent and looked like > from the impact. The rear side window was also blasted out from where the amp flew up and hit it on the recoil. I took the amp out and loaded it up in the rental car and drove home feeling glum that my Ampeg workhorse was, although still in one piece, likely pretty banged up on the inside.

But wouldn't you know it, I got that B-2 home, plugged her in, and wham bam she's good to go! Not a single problem at all! I've already played another show with it and have a recording session scheduled this weekend.

BA300-115.gifAnyway, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone at Ampeg for creating the best quality cabs and amps in the business. I've been an Ampeg man for years now and will be for years to come.

Keep up the good work.

Wow. We were certainly impressed. Yes, Ampeg amps are built tough but, man, that is out of control. Unfortunately, the B-2 was long ago discontinued. But if you are looking for similar wattage with a single 15, look no further than the BA300/115.

It's a Micro, Micro World

Micro-VR Stack

The Ampeg Micro-VR stack (Micro-VR head & SVT-210AV cab) has been making some pretty big waves with professional bassists. In fact, we've been getting a lot of orders from top-named artists who want to get their hands on this little guy. And who can blame them? After all, it's not just compact, portable and good looking...it actually delivers true Ampeg tone. Just ask Dennis Crouch, who is currently touring with Elvis Costello. He uses it on every single gig for his upright bass. Or maybe upright isn't your thing. Then maybe you should ask Mike Inez of Alice in Chains. When they play an acoustic set, you can bet that Mike is using his Micro.

But, big time artists aren't the only ones interested. Half the staff over here at Ampeg use it for band practice or recording when a full stack would not be viable. Long story short...the Micro-VR delivers true Ampeg tone in a package that looks awesome, is easy to carry around and is well...fun.
