We recently ran our first “My B-15” story. It was from Eva Gardner of P!NK and you can check it out here. Soon after, we received an email from none other than Brian Perry, former bassist for Prong. Since playing with legendary shock rock band, Lizzy Borden, Brian has held down the low end for a fat list of awesome players: Prong, Jake E. Lee, Flood, Dirty Looks… Jammed/worked with/for the likes of Disney, Vinny Appice (Heaven and Hell/Black Sabbath/Dio), Dave Lombardo (Slayer/Grip Inc.), Ray Luzier (Korn/DLR/Wicked Alliance), Randy Castillo (Ozzy Osborne), Eric Singer (Kiss/Alice Cooper), Nick Menza (Megadeth), Ivan De Prume (White Zombie). A couple of notable guitarists are: Jake E. Lee (Ozzy Osborne/Badlands/Wicked Alliance), and Tommy Victor (Prong/Ministry/ Danzig). Not too shabby. But, that’s not what this is all about. Brian loves his B-15 and wanted to share his B-15 story. Brian Perry’s B-15 Story: When I was about 14 years of age and living in Scranton, PA, I used to walk a few miles with bass in hand through rain, sleet and snow to go and jam at a friend’s house in West Side. I would do my best to keep the bottom but, because I didn’t have a proper bass amp, I used the same friend’s brother’s amp. He had a very nice all original B-15 from the ‘60s. Needless to say that little amp sounded incredible, and I eventually I bought it from him for $75.00. It served me well for sometime, but on a sad note the B-15 was destroyed in a rehearsal room fire a few years later… It was never replaced and was sorely missed. Fast-forward to 2008: One evening while on eBay I spied a 1965 B-15 that was bought at an estate sale! Not a scratch! All original including the tubes! The price was right and I bought it on the spot. Upon opening the amp I noticed a mass card for a woman by the name of Lena, and at that I decided to investigate who Lena was. After a few phone calls I found out… Lena played the organ for her church. She died in 1979 in Whitefish, Montana. The amp was stored in an attic ever since. I took it to Amphole here in Los Angeles and was told it was the cleanest, best sounding B-15 Bob (the owner) has ever seen. I’ve since used this amp along with other vintage basses for many a recording and all who hear will concur “It’s the best sounding amp they have ever heard”. And to think this amp went into the attic and stayed there for 30 years untouched! Unbelievably, it was put up there right at the same time I bought my first B-15. Thank you Jess Oliver and thank you, Ampeg, for all the years and the monstrous mountains of sound! - Brian Perry I know there’s a lot more of you out there with your own B-15 story. Email it, with pics, if possible to ampeg.news@loudtechinc.com if you’d like to share.
You remember Dr. K, right? If not, check out the original story here.
Since the original story, Dr. K has been able to get some real use out of his new Ampeg BA600/115. He sent us a nice letter and a pic of him with his new rig.
"...my new Ampeg is really getting a workout this summer. My SVT-4PRO is gettin' jealous," remarked Dr. K.
Thanks again, Dr. K and keep on keepin' on with your Ampeg!
We recently received a press kit from a group called " Dr. K's Motown Revue." This, in itself, is a rather commonplace sort of occurrence here at Ampeg headquarters. Just ask our Artist Relation guy, as he is responsible for looking through the stacks and stacks of press kits we receive. When he got to Dr. K's kit, it became quite clear that Dr. K was a true-blue Ampeg fan.
Dr. K (aka Paul Korman) bought an Ampeg B-15 in 1964. You can see him in action in the picture on the right. The rest of the band were obviously into Ampeg also.
That was then, this was now. Dr. K now tours with "Dr. K's Motown Revue." He sent a DVD and I have to say that his band is one of the most authentic and certainly entertaining Motown-styled groups touring today.
He has put together an amazing array of seasoned musicians and singers that he's either played with or wanted to play with over the course of his years. Their appeal, in large part, is attributable to the perfect blend of the Motown-era costumes worn and the outstanding group of singers who compliment this latter day "Funk Bros"* type band of musicians. Each singer is quite capable of fronting any band as a soloist and the combination of singers is more than enough to deliver authentically the vocal sound of the Motown roster of artists.
These days, Dr. K gigs with his Ampeg SVT-4PRO and cabs, but "The Round Sound" remains. Be sure to check out their website to get a listing of upcoming shows.
Here's a clip from the video Dr. K sent us...pretty amazing, right?
