While it can’t quite be categorized as blues or rap or psychedelic soul, Philadelphia’s G Love & Special Sauce blends their low-fi charm into a rich, gravy-smooth jumble of hip-hop, backroom blues and R&B. Formed in 1992 and releasing their self-titled debut album in 1994, G. Love found early success through heavy MTV rotation of their single “Cold Beverage,” an almost folky take on street rap and garage jam funk. While only two of their eight albums have cracked the Top 40, G. Love remains a highly influential band an maintains a strong following in the UK.
Jimi “Jazz” Prescott has been with the group since the beginning. His primary instrument is an acoustic double bass (though he does play electric), and forms the relaxed, blues-funk groove behind G. Love’s entrancing rhythms. In his spare time he studies modern jazz and break beat.
