Swedish bassist Magnus Sveningsson began his career playing heavy metal, but feeling limited by the genre, switched to a confectionary form of pop music with his new project, The Cardigans. Formed in 1992, the band’s debut, Emmerdale became a hit in Sweden in 1994 with the shimmering single “Rise & Shine.” Striking platinum again with Life in 1995, it was with their third album, First Band On The Moon(1996) and the space age-y hit “Lovefool” (featured in the movieRomeo And Juliet) that The Cardigans became international pop sensations.
While their music is an airy mix of light pop delivered with tongue-in-cheek kitsch, The Cardigans are inventive songwriters with a crisp and refreshing sound. Floating within the arrangements, Sveningsson adds a decidedly swanky bass touch, which gives the music both a contemporary and retro feel, challenging critics who try to categorize them.
