On a recommendation by Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan, Canadian rock bassist Melissa Auf der Maur was asked to join Hole in 1994 following the death of Kristen Pfaff. Though she initially turned the job down, Melissa eventually came onboard and stayed through Hole’s platinum smash hit, Celebrity Skin. She remained a band member until 1999.
After the dissolution of Hole, she spent two years in the Smashing Pumpkins, taking over bass chores for D’Arcy. Since then Melissa has collaborated with Ric Ocasek of the Cars and Rufus Wainwright, and has even fronted a Black Sabbath tribute band, Hand of Doom.
Her band Auf der Maur released its self-titled debut album in 2004. Modern rock radio responded to the contrast of Melissa’s innocent and melodic voice against a backdrop of alternative, riff-driven metal, giving her a loyal cult following.
